Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not only the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
