Pick of the Week

This Satirical Thriller

Coralie Fargeat's bold critique examines the tyranny of female beauty and the feared consequences of growing older. The veteran actress presents a brilliant portrayal in the role of Elisabeth, a 50-year-old actress demoted to hosting an aerobics show on the small screen. Edged out by her slimy boss Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she seeks out a mysterious and terrifying treatment known as "The Substance". This creates a younger clone named Sue, resulting in an increasingly toxic connection between the two. October 17th, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10

This Agatha Christie-esque thriller features Knightley as Laura, a skilled journalist who decides to take some time off from writing about global conflict to board a luxury cruise alongside a terminally ill Norwegian shipping heiress and donor, her spouse, as well as other filthy rich guests. However when an unknown lady disappears from the ship one night and everyone insists she wasn't real, her journalistic curiosity take over. Out now, Netflix

Presence Film

The acclaimed director challenges his creative boundaries through this nifty supernatural story shot entirely from the viewpoint of the spirit. After a clan featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe occupies their fresh home, the filming device – AKA the Presence – follows them around. The teen shows signs of sensing the poltergeist, and it looks like guarding her. However, the motive remains? The premise is enjoyable that doesn't outstay its welcome, featuring a surprise that may be unexpected. This Saturday, multiple showings, the Sky channel

This Self-Referential Film

The iconic actor fully commits to his eccentric image in this self-referential adventure. Contacted by the intelligence agency to investigate the potential kingpin, the actor's unique performing skills is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, the Channel 4 network

This Creepy Thriller

Derrickson's locked-room horror remains effective despite the lack of a follow-up. Taking place in 1978 Denver, several child abductions has made the youth on edge. When Finney is kidnapped by the villain and imprisoned in a basement, he fears the worst. Yet the disconnected phone on the wall keeps ringing, with eerie communicators giving advice, as the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. Saturday 11 October, late evening, Film4

This Dramatic Portrait

In the conflict between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for Mammon in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish film adaptation of the disgraced TV preacher plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield plays the greedy Jim, who states early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple set about capitalizing on the people's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of poor styling, bad makeup and insincerity, yet Chastain succeeds to show the character as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, late night, the Film4 channel

The Spy Mystery

This week's another release by the same director presents a spy mystery as sharp like the turtlenecks sported by Michael Fassbender's British agent. He is tasked to discover a traitor within their ranks from five suspects – among them is his own wife. Both actors are masters of deadpan cool, so a delicious mental battle of truth or lie takes place. Additional actors participate the clever spy entertainment.
